Out of all the post-Nirvana alternative bands to break into the pop mainstream,
Green Day was second only to Pearl Jam in influence. At their core, Green Day
were simply punk revivalists, recharging the energy of speedy, catchy three chord punk
songs. Part of the 80's northern California underground punk scene, the band was formed
by childhood friends, Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar and vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass.)
In 1989 after the release of their independent album; 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour
the band replaced drummer Al Sobrante with the Current drummer Tre Cool.
Throughout the early 90's, Green Day continued to cultivate a cult following with the
release of their second album Kerplunk in 92. With Kerplunks massive underground
success, a wave of major labels began calling which led to the band signing with
Reprise. Green Day's major label debut, was released in the spring of 94 thanks to
support for the initial single "Longview," Dookie became a major hit selling over
8 million copies and bringing the power trio to TV sets everywhere. In 1995 Green
Day released Insomniac and hit #1 again on the rock charts selling almost 3 million
copies by the summer of 96. In late 97 the band released Nimrod, followed by their long
awaited- follow- up the poppy record “Warning” came 3 years later and sold well setting
the stage for what was to come.
Another long wait preceded 2004’s American Idiot, an aggressive rock opera that became
a worldwide chart topper, a multi platinum seller and easily the most successful record
of the year, and the most successful of Green Days career. The band is currently the
toast of the recording industry hitting numerous awards shows and playing
Britain’s "Wembley Stadium" for 2 nights for over 130,000 people. Green Day are
currently the most popular band in the world.
